What do I need to know about importing/tariffs?

 

Thank you for showing interest in importing one of our Easy Sled kits.  Importing from Canada isn't complicated or difficult by any means, but given the current US tariff fees, it will add costs. Transparency is important to us to ensure our customers understand the process and aren't met with unexpected surprises to prevent any frustration with Easy Sled.  This is why we've prepared the information below for your consideration.
 

1. Who charges the tariffs and why - Tariffs are charged by the US government as a measure to encourage spending within the USA instead of importing products from other countries (ie: "Buy local").  The money is charged by the US Government and goes to the US Government.  Canada (nor Easy Sled) does not charge any sort of export tariff or fees - once you purchase a kit from Easy Sled there will be no additional costs from our side.
    

2. No refunds on refusals - If you refuse the delivery of your kit for any reason, we will not be able to issue a refund.  When a customer declines delivery, the courier simply abandons the package - we do not get it back. The best way to think of it is that Easy Sled has upheld our part of the deal - we shipped the product you purchased.  If you decline it due to tariffs or any other reason, that's a choice made by you.  We still absolutely stand by our product warranty and are happy to resolve issues with the product after delivery (ie: damaged in shipment, missing/damaged parts etc).  We won't leave you hanging and we can help you navigate any issues to the best of our ability , but we have to be clear that declined packages are non-refundable.
    

3. Import Costs - Import costs are separate from the original purchase price of the kit and are paid directly to the courier (who then passes it onto the US Gov't).  They will email you an invoice which must be paid before delivery.  We've seen fees of roughly $40-45 USD per kit in tariffs, plus $20-25 USD per package for the courier admin fees. To minimize costs, we can ship up to 4 kits per package to save on the admin fees - plus with 3 or more kits, we automatically add a 10% discount on the entire order.  If there is an error on the tariffs charged (which is unlikely), they will usually need to be paid first and then you can work with the courier to correct it via a dispute.  If you delay payment too long, the courier may automatically abandon the package.  
   Note: The estimates above are based on what we've seen from US customers on recent shipments and what the published tariff rates are for aluminum.  We have seen customers charged $200+USD in tariffs/fees when UPS makes an error on the import form. These errors are correctable, but if it happens to your shipment please understand that you will have to work with UPS to correct the charges.  We are happy to provide information and guidance, but we cannot actually do the legwork with UPS.

4. VERY IMPORTANT - UPS Emails
   Once your package is shipped, you will likely receive an email from UPS titled "UPS Needs Info for Customs Clearance - YourTrackingNumber".  Please do not open this link as it is only accessible once and we will be unable to upload the proper documentation on your behalf.  Please email us at easysled.ontario@gmail.com to let us know and we will upload the correct information that we have readily available.  We usually get the same email, but aren't always able to access it immediately. 

We hate that we have to make this so formal, but we are trying to empower our US customers with information in order to help you understand the process and accept the risks before we ship a product to avoid any surprises.​​
